What goes in a family emergency binder (and what never should)
An emergency binder answers one question for the people you love: "If you couldn't tell us — where is everything?" The complete version has seven sections, and takes one evening if you don't start from a blank page.
The seven sections
1. Emergency contacts — family, doctor, lawyer, insurance agent, plus an out-of-area check-in contact and a meeting point.
2. Medical sheets — one page per family member: allergies, medications with dosages, conditions, doctor, insurer.
3. Accounts & policies inventory — every institution you have a relationship with: banks, insurers, utilities, subscriptions that matter.
4. Home essentials — water and gas shutoffs, breaker panel, spare key, alarm company. The page a house-sitter or a panicked teenager needs.
5. Documents locator — where the will, deeds, titles, passports and policies physically are. Not copies — locations.
6. Wishes — preferences and a few words in your own voice. Not a will; a kindness.
7. Review schedule — the page that keeps the binder from quietly going stale.
What should NEVER go in it (typed)
Passwords. Full account numbers typed into any website or stored in any cloud. PINs. The binder's power is that it's paper — so sensitive numbers should be added by pen after printing, existing nowhere digital. Where to keep it
